HAL'S STORY: FROM MEDIOCRITY TO MIRACLES

Welcome to my “About Me” page. I always feel a little awkward writing about myself, but I guess that’s my issue to deal with, so I’ll stop burdening you with my insecurities and get to the relevant details. :^)

I believe that one of the greatest gifts each of us can give, to those we love and those we lead, is to fulfill our potential, because in doing so we can help others to do the same. Thus, my purpose has long been centered around striving to evolve toward my highest potential, in service of humanity.

Growing up, I was fairly mediocre at just about everything I did. I didn’t get good grades in school, wasn’t an athlete, nor was I popular. However, at age 15, I kinda got lucky and ended up as a radio DJ with my own weekly radio show. That was a dream come true for me.

Then at 19, one of my closest friends talked me into temporarily putting my dream on hold to work for a direct marketing company. I was hired by Cutco Cutlery and although I didn’t have much confidence in myself, borrowing confidence from my mentor, I went on to become one of the top salespeople in the history of the company. That changed everything for me.

Having lacked confidence, discipline, and belief in myself, for most of my life, I began to see what is true for all of us–that every single one of us is just as worthy, deserving, and capable of achieving anything we want in life, as any other person on earth. This realization gave birth to my life’s purpose.

HAL IS FOUND DEAD

MY FIRST WAKE UP CALL: FOUND DEAD AT THE SCENE

On December 3rd, 1999, I received my first standing ovation after giving a motivational speech to my colleagues. I truly felt on top of the world that night, and yet that was also the night my world would nearly end.

Driving home, my Ford Mustang was hit head on by a drunk driver at over 70 miles per hour, and my car was propelled into oncoming traffic, where another vehicle crashed into my driver’s side door.

In an instant, I broke 11 bones, suffered permanent brain damage, and began losing blood. One hour later, I was finally removed from the wreckage and was found dead at the scene. I stopped breathing, and my heart stopped beating for 6 long minutes.

Six days later, I woke up from a coma to face my new unimaginable reality. Doctors told me I would likely never walk again. Harnessing the power of unwavering faith (in God, in myself, and in the mind’s ability to heal the body), I took my first step 3 weeks after I was found dead.

THE MIRACLE MORNING IS BORN

MY SECOND WAKE UP CALL: THE MIRACLE MORNING IS BORN

In 2007, the United States economy crashed, and like millions of Americans, I crashed with it. I lost over half of my income, racked up $52,000 in credit card debt, and my home was foreclosed on by the bank.

I felt hopeless.

I got depressed.

I was desperate.

Desperation turned into inspiration, and a series of events led me to the idea that I needed to develop and commit to a daily personal development ritual, so that I could start becoming the person I needed to be, in order to turn my life around. I woke up the next morning and started my day with six of the most timeless personal growth practices (Silence, Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, Reading, and Scribing), and within two months, I had more than doubled my income, began training for a 52-mile ultra-marathon and decided to start writing a book to share my experience with others.

Now, The Miracle Morning has been translated into 37 languages, sold over 2.5 million copies, and has transformed the lives of millions of people around the world. Most importantly, readers and practitioners of The Miracle Morning have co-created a global Miracle Morning Community, made up of millions of people who are committed to waking up each day and elevating the consciousness of humanity one person at a time.

HAL GETS CANCER

MY THIRD WAKE UP CALL: "HAL, YOU HAVE A 20-30% CHANCE OF SURVIVING"

At age 37, I nearly died again when my heart, lungs, and kidneys were on the verge of failing. After 7 visits to the ER to have my lung drained, and opinions from three different hospitals, I was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of cancer: acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Doctors told me that I had a 20-30% chance of surviving. As a father with a 7-year old daughter and a 4-year old son, that was just about the worst news I could have received.

However, what was true for me is true for all of us; I had the ability to choose how I would respond. My chosen response, which I told my wife on the day that I was diagnosed, was that I would choose to be the happiest and most grateful I had ever been, while I endured what would become the most difficult time in my life. Oh, and in my mind, there was a 100% chance that I would be in the 30% of those that survive this cancer.

MEET MY THREE
FAVORITE PEOPLE

Before I was diagnosed with cancer, if you would have asked me what was most important in my life, I would have said “my family” without hesitation. But my schedule didn’t reflect that. I was a workaholic, and my family often got put on the back burner.

However, that’s changed. My life now revolves around these three beautiful human beings. I only work while my kids are in school. I bring my family with me to my speaking engagements. And I spend every possible moment with them. Based on my purpose in life (striving to evolve toward my highest potential, in service of humanity), my hope is to inspire others to get clear on what matters most to them, so that each of us can live in alignment with our values. And if spending more quality time with the people we love is one way that we get to do that, then I’d say that we are truly blessed.

ELEVATE

Let's Keep Helping Each Other

I believe we are part of the human family, sharing far more in common with each other than any perceived differences. My mission in life is to elevate the consciousness of humanity, one person at a time.

You are that one person. I am that one person. We are all that one person. And together, as each of us commits to elevating our own consciousness, by becoming more aware and intentional in everything we do, the consciousness of humanity is inevitably elevated.

Thank you for caring enough to make a positive impact for yourself and others, and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
